Fryslân Open Tournaments


The WFD Foundation organises the Fryslân Open tournament once a year. The Fryslân Open is the collective name of a week-long series of tournaments held in the picturesque town of Franeker.

The tournaments:
This week of mindsports begins on Tuesday with a tournament for primary school pupils. The theatre Koornbeurs will then become the stage for an exciting draughts tournament for schoolchildren. They will then play the endgame variant FRYSK!

On Tuesday evening, the draw will be held for the international tournament Fryslân Open in which Frisian players will be paired with players from abroad as much as possible. This tournament will last three days, when eight games will be played on two historic sailing ships of the Tallship company from Franeker. The strongest players can qualify for the Master and Grandmaster tournament here.

The Grandmaster and Master tournament starts with one game in Franeker's unique planetarium on Friday evening. The next two games will be played on Saturday in the wedding hall of the old town hall in Franeker.
On the same day, another qualification tournament will be played opposite the town hall in theatre Koornbeurs, where players can still qualify for the FRYSK! World Championship.


As a finale, the World Championship FRYSK! 16 players who qualified through various tournaments will play the World Championship FRYSK!
